"Find your beach"

Yes, it snowed this week, and yes it is May in a few days. Just when you thought Summer was arriving - we get thrown a typically British curve-ball. You can't blame us for drifting off into a day dream...

Finding ourselves dreaming of clear white beaches we stumbled upon Corona. As the light alcoholic beer has always been associated with sunshine and trips abroad the adopted slogan seems very appropriate. In fact Corona have recently set up a campaign with a few variants of the "find your beach" quote – "log off, lime in," "unplugged" and "take your lime" are 3 of a few that often refer to the separation between everyday life and the beach.

It seems we really will have to find our beaches this Summer.

''Beauty with heart''

Today is Earth Day - a day to think about the planet, to remember to act responsibly and to take a moment to consider the damage we are continually causing it.

Over time brands have become more aware, and more ''organic'' about their approach. The Body Shop - a reputable high street beauty store have maintained this angle with their slogan - ''beauty at heart'' referencing the care and responsible nature of the business.

Remember to be responsible and always consider the beauty of the world with heart.

Queen at 90: A look back at advertising from 1926

Today, Queen Elizabeth II turns 90. She’s lived through a World War, seen cultures and icons come and go and more importantly (from a Pure Media perspective) – seen advertising transform and diversify.

Rewind back to grainy 1926. The advertising landscape was seen as functional – it lacked colour, was text heavy, and brands were generally aiming at domestic, everyday life.  It wasn't all doom and gloom however as the 1920's saw a spawn in new technologies like radio, and the first shows soon became sponsored by advertisers. Radio stations saw an opportunity to sell the same recognition to many companies, and thus the radio spot was born.

Whatever way you look at it, it is certainly an impressive feat that the Queen has lived through this period of transition, being monarch for 72% of these 90 years.

Happy Birthday Your Majesty. Expert reign.

J U S T Y O U & blu

We’re sure you’ve see those alluring blue lights twinkling like fireflies around the city of late… well smoke signals are now making their way across our TV screens and National Press, clouding our vision by flickering around Calvin Klein style imagery.

We are of course referring to the e-cigarette brand Blu, who provocatively wrapped themselves around yesterday’s Metro and Evening Standard. The idea of advertising e-cigarettes raises a few eyebrows, but the racy approach from Blu certainly raises a lot more.

Yesterday’s coverwraps saw an attractive naked woman standing at the window of her city apartment indulging in one of Blu’s ‘glow sticks’. Even the copy on the inside cover was attractive claiming the e-cigarettes are ‘modern’, flexible, ‘slim’, and ‘easy’, offering 15% off the Blu kit, not to mention the obvious denotation of the brand name and logo, guys you know what I’m referring to. Flicking over to the OBC, Blu continue to fly close to the wind with yet another black and white shot, this time of a rugged woman puffing the ‘trendy’ nicotine gadget in her helicopter, suggesting, wealth, style, and that classic blasé coolness of a cigarette.

Now, we could rant about the objectification of women and the controversy of advertising e-cigarettes, but our biggest concern was the sexualisation and ‘cool’ character Blu are creating for e-cigs. Should Blu be allowed to portray such an enticing lifestyle brand image for a product that contains nicotine? The combination of this with the candy shop of flavours available is sure to be a big hit with early adopters. Blu might want to think twice next time they decided to spread.

''Fashion that delivers''

The world is changing, and fashion is no exception. Not only does it change with time, so does the way we purchase our clothes. As on-line shopping becomes increasingly practical and popular the fashion industry sees changes, with more and more internet retailers appearing on the scene.

Back in 2000, budding entrepreneur Natalie Massenet - the company's CEO and founder - was due to begin setting up a chain of coffee-shops - but was advised otherwise. Now Net-a-Porter claims to be the world's premier luxury fashion destination.

With just a few clicks Net-A-Porter has the ability to deliver all over the globe in just 24 hours - the transition from entrepreneurial to expert really has brought the world fashion that delivers.

''It's Pimm's O'clock'' (Or is it?)

It may seem odd to choose a Pimms slogan when Spring has only just sprung. (It's never too late or too early to have a Pimms is it!?) But the brand, generally associated with summer, picnics in the sun and Wimbledon Tennis; today conjured up an deliciously excellent April fool's marketing ploy by claiming they were due to sponsor Big Ben.

If Pimm's were to some how pull this stunt off, surely it would go down as the best piece of outdoor marketing we'd seen in London for years.

Believe it or not, it really is Pimms O'clock today.

''Here today, goo tomorrow''

Cadbury's Creme Egg – one of the powerhouse chocolates of the Easter period, have been in the media limelight for all the wrong reasons for the past couple of years. A storm of protest ensued from consumers when the recipe was altered in 2015 to use a cheaper chocolate variation as opposed to the traditional Dairy Milk.  As a result a whopping £10 million was reportedly lost from sales and the reputation turned to goo.

In the end it is left up to the consumer to decide whether they still enjoy the taste of the Creme Egg as the manufactures consider whether the recipe fix is worth the hit in popularity. Perhaps if not, the famous egg really will be here today and goo tomorrow.

''Picked at the peak of perfection''

The  Jolly Green Giant first graced TV screens in the 1960's. Virtually everyone will be familiar with the mascot, as made famous by the canned vegetable brand, Green Giant.

The Valley of the Jolly Green Giant (as seen in the original 1960's TV ad) where the original corn was ''picked at the peak of perfection'' - refers to the Minnesota River valley area in the States. Today, just before dropping down into the valley heading south an enormous wooden sign of the Jolly Green Giant, along with the Little Green Sprout, is visible with the caption "Welcome to the Valley." Since the sign pokes up through the trees, it has become a source of minor controversy as it frequently startles motorists.

''A Penguin for every shelf''

In light of the fact that yesterday was World Book Day - top of the Twitter trends #WorldBookDay - and in recognition that Penguin books have forever been a staple part to bookshelves in many households we've chosen Penguin as our Pure slogan of the week.

With Mother’s Day looming (Sunday just in case you needed a quick reminder) there’s no better gift than a good old fashioned Ladybird (who are part of Penguin) book.

"How it works - The Mum" is likely the most appropriate of the Ladybird series, but there are also some other interesting ones including "The Hipster" "The Husband," even "The Hangover," which may also be relevant to some on Sunday.

With such a wide variety of themes, and aimed at all ages, its more than likely there will already be one nestled on your bookshelf at home.

"Where Dreams Come True"

This week our Pure Slogan of the Week is Disneyland's "Where Dreams Come True".

Walt Disney himself saw to the development and success of Disneyland; "I want to have a place that's as clean as anything could ever be, and all the people in it are first-class citizens, and treated like guests."

While the amusement park itself was primarily intended for children, Disney's vision was to create a safe environment where even parents could relive their carefree childhood memories.

Today, the park has evolved into one of the world's most popular amusement resorts, with eight different theme parks, each of them embodying unique values of the Disney universe - a true testament to Disney's slogan.

''Always stay true to where you're from''

Fresh off the back of yesterday’s National Drink Wine Day it makes perfect sense that a wine brand should feature as this week’s slogan.

Jacob’s Creek - ‘Always stay true to where you’re from’ stands out as interesting interpretation towards a case that once you become a wine drinker, you will always be a wine lover – never forgetting this truth.

Some say with wine it’s an open door policy… show up with wine and we’ll open the door…

''All because the lady loves Milk Tray''

This Sunday is Valentine’s Day. When thinking of Valentine’s we think of hearts, images of cupid and a bouquet of flowers, but you can never forget Chocolate which has always been associated and referenced around the theme of love and romance. This weekend if you can’t buy happiness you can buy chocolate, which is kind of the same thing…

After many years of Cadbury's running iconic ads  featuring various swarthy, adventurous, black polo neck wearing 'Milk Tray Men' - 2015 saw the commercial recruitment of the latest character to take on the lead role and star in the ads .... including some great celeb filled recruitment ads.

After a national search for the 21st Century Milk Tray man, the hotly contested competition was finally won recently by an emotional Patrick McBride - a firefighter from London.

Super Bowl 2016 TV ads: The best and the worst

If you were able to keep yourself awake to be amongst the 100+ million worldwide audience to endure the media spectacle that was Super Bowl 50 on Sunday night then you will have seen an array of TV ads on display. Some were good, some were not great, and as always it is completely up to the consumer to decide which were effective and which weren't. The advertisers are certainly hoping it's the former as an ad space during the game costed around a cool $5 million for just about a 30—second slot.

The Audi ad is our favourite, the connotation of flying to space, and the father/son connection is particularly potent and by drawing on the idea of being a commander of a powerful machine it is likely to have been highly impactful amongst male viewers, as It considers typical American ideals of glory and success. Similarly the use of the song 'Starman' by David Bowie as its backing audio is a smart call considering the significance of the singer's passing two weeks ago.

We'd be interested to know which was your favourite...

''Motion & Emotion''

The 6 Nations Championship begins tomorrow, and this year ITV for the first time in the tournament’s history will be sharing coverage of the games with the BBC.

Peugeot have signed a two-year sponsorship deal with ITV for the coverage, utilising their short but snappy slogan ‘Motion & Emotion’ which is perfectly suitable for the embodiment of the game of Rugby.

''At the heart of the image''

Nikon are famous for production of their timeless and classic cameras and lenses. Interestingly every Nikon camera is marked with ‘’Made in Occupied Japan’’ because they were manufactured in the years after WW2. Nikon have also been famed for making the first underwater camera in 1992.

Here are some images from the 2015 Nikon photo contest:

The slogan makes an interesting connotation towards the power of images and the significance of the heart and passion towards the image and photography

''Once you go Jack, you never go back''

Considering it's Friday, the world's most renowned whiskey seemed like an apt choice for Slogan of the Week. The founder of Jack Daniel's was actually called Jasper Daniel but was nicknamed Jack when the hard stuff began being produced in the late-19th century.

The 'number 7' has a mysterious context, with much speculation surrounding it.  It was rumoured that Jack had 7 girlfriends while others say he lost a batch of whiskey for 7 years before re-finding it. Whatever the reason the name has become synonymous with the brand ever since.

We went Jack and we ain't going back.

The best a man can get

Our Pure slogan of the week is Gillette’s “The best a man can get”.

Gillette started as a small business by King Camp Gillette, who invented and later patented the best selling version of the safety razor.

The design of the razor allowed for steel stamped razor blades to be used, rather than the popular forged blades at the time, which required regular sharpening.

“The best a man can get” was first introduced as a campaign to create an association between masculinity and premium products, while also recognising the “ritualistic” nature of shaving for men.

Today, Gillette has become one of the most recognisable brands in the portfolio of Procter & Gamble. Its acquisition in 2005 for $57 billion, meant that Procter & Gamble had climbed to the first position as the world’s largest consumer products company.

Walk in Crawl Out

It's January, which means many people will be making their new year's resolutions. Without a doubt 'I want to try and get fitter' will be a top resolution for most. The slogan 'Walk in Crawl Out' used by the London based gym franchise Gym Box (with one just around the corner from us here in Farringdon) fits this weeks Pure slogan perfectly.

The Gym Box philosophy evolves around the idea of working out with a 'smile' while energising and igniting every member as they sweat it out.
